I don’t know about you, but the K–12 art classes that I have seen — both my own when I was a student and the classes my children took — did very little to develop the skills that an artist needs to actually draw or paint or sculpt something. There were various assignments — Paint a picture of your family, draw something to illustrate the story you wrote — but seldom did the teacher talk about how to paint or draw. Imagine a math class where the basics of addition and subtraction are not taught — that is the state of much of art education today.
The Da Vinci Initiative is trying to change that. It offers classes, workshops, and online resources based on classic atelier training. Art teachers are taught the basic principles underlying classic drawing, painting, and sculpting and shown how to teach those principles to their students. Highly recommended.
